A Blue-Eyed Spider and Some Vintage China Plates

Do you remember me? The summer has begun, and of course, I am too busy for words. Or at least, too busy to blog. I still think of you, though!

We have been back from the Wren's Nest for almost a week, and have spent most of the time working on our poor yard that had been neglected for 12 days. Need I say more!

While we were in Hendersonville, we went to the annual Garden Jubilee, and though I purchased a thank-you gift for our friends who watched our house while we were gone, I was so proud of myself for, in addition to a few Iris rhizones, buying only two other things, one of which was something we really needed and I specifically hoped to find there (I will share the other one with you in a future post.)

We needed a doorstop to hold open the door
that goes from the screened porch into
the enclosed porch,
as the wind keeps blowing it shut.
I thought this guy was the cutest little thing,
and he is very good as his task
since his body (a rock)
is quite heavy.
There were all sorts of artisans there,
and I was amazed at how crafty
they all were...

And speaking of clever artisans,
I loved this display of broken china necklaces.
The vendor actually used the plates that she cut the pieces
of china out of to display the pendants that she made
out of said plates.
If you click on the photo below to enlarge it,
you will see what I mean...

We attended this event with our friends who recently bought the unit next door to Birdsong Cottage and had a great day. Of course, this was the only "great" day we had, since most of our time up there was spent doing hard labor on The Wren's Nest. Who can figure? More on that saga later.

I'm hoping that your week has gotten off to a great start!

Buying Milk Paint: Along the Way

Hello readers!

Continuing with my previous post, I did go to pick up my Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint on Wednesday. It is sold at SuzAnna's, the larger shop at Vintage Village, which consists of several booths run by different vendors. This shop is the furthest away from the parking lot, so "along the way" I couldn't resist taking these photos.

Two Old Birds,
a great shop where I buy...

...all of my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint...

always has cute little things out in front...

and a black bird on the fence.
But alas, no chalk paint this day.
Keep walking, Sue...

Another shop.
Not sure of the name,
but a sweet little building
chock full of great finds...

Also along the way,
a section of salvage from an old farmhouse...

And finally, I got to SuzAnna's,
where there was this very creative
display of old hankies...

...and then some...

Another booth featured this lovely
bird assemblage.
Why can't I be this creative?...

This was from a lovely booth
that was just re-done to feature
pink things...

And this display in another
shop featured purple,
even the cowgirl boots!!...

Here are some lovely sachets.
They were wrapped in cellophane,
so didn't photograph too well,
but gorgeous nonetheless...

And some glittery lavender birds
in a chippy iron bowl...

...with one on this pretty plate...

But I stuck to my target,
forged on to my real destination
and purpose of my visit
(to spend my Christmas gift certificate)...

...and bought my Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint
in Farmhouse White!
Along with a stirrer, since this paint comes in
powdered form and you mix it yourself.
And some bonding agent so that the
paint will cover the highly varnished
piece of junk dresser that I will use it on...

Oh, of course some wax
and a waxing brush...

Bye-bye gift certificate!
Hello painting adventure!

Do you have any furniture that you will re-finish?
Have you used MMSMP?
If so, I'd love to hear about it!

Neutral Odds and Ends

Good morning!

Yesterday I went to my favorite antique place, Vintage Village in Raleigh, NC, to pick up my order of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint (Farmhouse White, which I wrote about in a recent post), and browsed around with phone in hand taking some photos. It is amazing how many neutral items you can find at these places. And the best part? They are set up in the most wonderful vignettes, so I don't have to do any staging! You have to love it.

Handles and knobs...

Curio cabinets...

Baskets and picket fence pieces...

Old painted frames...

A chippy paint door actually used on this shop...

And, of course, a close-up of its old
knob...

Not to mention,
the biggest bread bowl I have ever seen,
with a bowl of fruit...

And who could not take a photo of this sign,
with beautiful old stuff around it...

In my next post I'll provide the rest
of the photos that I took there,
but for today,
I am linking to
Wen's Simply Neutrals Tuesday Party.
Why don't you pop over there and say hello
to some of my other friends!
You can find Wen's blog here.

Have a wonderful day!

Vintage Village: An Hour of Buying Nothing

Yesterday my hubby had some things to do, so I decided to take a trip to Vintage Village. One of the shops there sells Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint, so I wanted to see if they had the new color, Farmhouse White. Have you seen it yet? It is really a nice shade of white, and I want to use some to refinish an old dresser that I bought a couple of years ago (one of two that is still sitting in the garage waiting for some love. Oops.).

Don't you just love the way she did this hutch?
Her blog is on my side bar,
but you can also click here
to see more of her post about this color...

So, the vendor did not yet have the paint, but they assured me that it is on order, so I will keep on checking. Its too cold to paint down in the garage right now anyway.

I did walk around for a little while and take some quick photos, but not a lot because it was kind of cold. Even inside the buildings it is cold, as most of them are not heated.

This was an adorable new building
that had some things for sale inside.
Pardon the long morning shadows,
but I couldn't resist a photo...

...and look how cute the top is.
Wouldn't this make a great garden shed?...

This is another building,
which has been there for awhile...

I've written about Vintage Village before,
but can never resist taking more photos,
especially when the sky looks as pretty as this...

I almost wanted to buy this lovely old garden
statue,
but didn't want to have to lift it!

I did love this little farm animal metal
garden ornament...

...and of course, as always, their great stash of
vintage doors...

But, surprising myself, I bought nothing,
and decided to save the gift certificate that Mr. Perch
gave me for Christmas.
I will stick to the plan and hold out for
Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in
Farmhouse White!!!

A Ladder, a Bench and an Old Window

Good morning to all!

Yesterday Mr. Perch, my darling hubby, and I took off for a little antique hunting. Not actually antiques, mind you, but just fun old stuff. This is not DH's favorite thing to do, but he was looking for something specific so was willing to go. Unfortunately, he didn't find it (when we do, it will be fodder for a future post), but we I had fun looking anyway! One of our favorite places to go is The Vintage Village in Raleigh, NC, which is a short drive from where we live. The Village is composed of several different small shops, along with SuzAnna's Antiques, which is the largest store and is home to various vendors. I've written about shopping here before. It's always fun to look, and you can generally expect to find something that you weren't even looking for!

Following are some photos that I took in SuzAnna's. The other shops are smaller, so I don't generally shoot pictures in them as I don't want to be too conspicuous!

Outside...

Inside.
That's my Mr. Perch browsing around in
the back!...

This vendor sold some nice purses and totes...

All kinds of goodness here.
Look up, down, and all around.
Lots of stuff hangs from the ceilings
and upper walls...

A pretty display of china...

...and a sweet Christmas display
in blue and green...

Laces...

...and hand-painted signs galore.
DH liked the one with the little red wagon.
I told him we couldn't buy it.
He wanted to know why.
I told him not to ask any questions.
"Did you buy one from Pinterest?",
he asked.
"One doesn't buy stuff from Pinterest",
I replied, and told him to drop it.
He did.
Can you guess why I didn't want to buy the sign
with the little red wagon?...

This was a really unusual, a LARGE winding spool
of fat twine.
Not something I was looking for,
but very cool to look at...

In this display my heart sang over the
galvanized wash tubs,
and they were marked with very reasonable
prices,
but alas, they were not to be mine today...

And thought we don't need yet another dresser,
I loved this one.
And in spite of the fact that I am not so much
a red lover,
I thought this display of red was very pretty...

More signage...

...and a mannequin that I swooned over.
Someone stopped to ask me a question,
and I totally forgot to check the price on it.
It must be my age.
I was probably born before this mannequin
was manufactured ;~)...

I liked the way that a boxwood
wreath formed the letter "O"
in this display...

And this shop also carries Miss Mustard Seed
paint products.
Not only that, but Marion,
A/K/A Miss Mustard Seed,
is visiting this shop on November 28th.
Imagine that.
Her husband's family lives here,
though he and Marion live in PA...

OK.
So I am the winner.
I found three items, all of which I was looking
for.
A ladder. A bench. And an old window...

What am I going to use them for?
You will have to keep reading my little old blog
to find out!

Did you bring home any junk for your garage today?

Many thanks for coming by!
