Assemblage Art: "A Little Bird Told Me"

Good morning friends and happy Sunday!

We returned home earlier this week after 10 days at The Wren's Nest, and it has taken me this long to catch up on laundry and garden work, so here I am at last. Doesn't it seem like there are never enough hours in the day?

We finally hung up an assemblage piece that I started a while ago, and finished over the winter.

Here is the piece, which has been hung
next to the window in the living room.
We actually managed to get in the last
two new windows this trip.
More on that saga later this week!
You may recall that we had completed
16 of the 18 but work came to a
standstill last June when the issues
started with the Mister's foot.
We even put up our first curtains,
which are a little more "printy" than
what I would used here at home,
but "cottagey" enough for this place
without being too cute!...

This was a generic Michael's wood shadow
box that I originally purchased for I-don't-know-
what and painted with Waverly Chalk paint
from the craft section of Walmart.
The color is "plaster".
The inside of the box as purchased
was lined with beige fabric.
Of course, its so hard for me to create
something without using an old photo...

The feathers were found in our yard some
time ago. As I always do with found feathers,
I placed them in a zip lock baggie with
bug spray, sealed it shut, and let them
sit in there for a while, ensuring that any
mites on the feathers would be dead.
The nest was a vacated real one found up at
The Wren's Nest when we cut down some
old bushes up there, and was also treated
the same as the feathers.
Because it was crumbly,
I sealed it with spray acrylic
and carefully glued it to a background
of wax paper to make sure that it
didn't crumble further once placed in the box.
The eggs are little paper eggs that I
think were part of a home decor set once
purchased at Target.
You can read more about the actual nest here...

A copy of some vintage sheet music,
and some paper flowers fastened with
brads,
along with some twigs,
seed pods from daylilies here at home,
and game letters...

But my favorite part is the old rusted doorbell
that I bought a long time ago and was
waiting for the perfect place to reside.
It's all about home!...

What have you been up to lately?
Thanks so much for coming by!

Valentine's Day and a German Pancake

Happy Valentine's Day!

In honor of this special day of love,
I thought I would share a scan
of this vintage sheet music that I have.
Use as you wish in your artwork!

The other day I took a trip over to World Market.
I love puttering about in their food (and wine!) section
because you see so many things that you don't
see elsewhere.
I am not a big pancake person
(as in the big thick things that you get
in most restaurants).
I would much rather eat French crepes
or nice puffy German pancakes
(perhaps because I am of
French and German descent),
so imagine my excitement when
I saw THIS...

Once box makes two batches,
with one batch being one large pancake
baked in the oven in a cast iron pan
at 450 degrees,
and coming out looking like this...

Served with fresh blueberries
and powdered sugar...

...and a side of breakfast sausages,
it made for a delicious Valentine's
breakfast today.
And the best part?
Mr. Perch did the dishes!

We will go out to dinner tonight with family members.
This day is special for us,
because we got engaged seven
years ago today.

Do you have any special plans for today?

Keep love in your heart!

Inspiration in Old Papers

Good morning my friends!

Before we went to Birdsong this last time, I had ordered and received some stacks of old papers. They were from a few different Etsy sellers, all aged to perfection, and in my book, just lovely to look at. I haven't yet had time to go through all of the pages in each set, but a quick flip-through when I got ready to take these photos gave me an idea of what was in store. Most were random picks by the sellers, but so far I love them.

How bad could these be if one of the dictionary
pages included a raven
(think Halloween!)...

Some good book pages that also offer
some inspiration...

Another group of dictionary pages.
Do you suppose it is providence that one
of them shows "perch" at the top?
(Think Miss Phoebe!)...

Random pages of sheet music...

I love these interest tables.
Cool stuff from the days before computers...

So, I couldn't resist the 25 LARGE pages of railroad register
from the Long Island Express from the early 1900's.
The fact that I grew up on Long Island
is besides the point! ;~)...

And who can resist old paper doilies,
aged with the patina of time?...

Now, a REAL artist would have immediately used these
in some mixed media masterpiece to be envied by all,
shared it on her blog for all to Pin,
and then put it in her Etsy shop for an outrageous price.

As for me,
I guess I'll just stare at them while I ponder what to create with them.
Who said that I was a real artist anyway?

The three little folks...

Good morning my friends!

I haven't shared anything with you for awhile, so I thought that I would send a little something your way to use in your art. I think that I told you I had been collecting some vintage sheet music to go with some of the old photos in my collection, so below are a couple of things for you. Save and use as you like!

A photo of three darling Victorian children.
I love the boots...

This is the reverse of the photo,
which I thought was great in itself...

And the cover to some old sheet music.
How cute is this?...

It might be interesting to do something with red!

A day in the house...

Hello friends! I hope you are well and liking this never-ending winter better than I am. I couldn't believe that it was 38 out this morning when my neighbor and I walked. It didn't warm up much, so I decided to stay inside, and among other things, play around in my studio.

I thought I would get more accomplished than I did, but at least I completed a birthday card for my grandson's first birthday.

It started with a pretty piece of sheet music...

...along with a charming vintage photo of little children
at what looks like a birthday party...

...and ended up this card...

Lately I have been drawn to old sheet music, but more about that on a future post.

Sorry for the quality of these photos, but the lighting in here is terrible on this cloudy day!  Just wanted to say hello. Have a great evening!
