A southern snow and a warm recipe...

Friday night greetings from the Perch!

Well, it looks like we had our "blizzard" of the year...about one inch of snow that fell late last night, after having rained for almost the whole week. We don't get much snow in this area, usually about one or two inches each winter, but it pretty much sends people into a state of major preparedness, with schools either starting on a two hour delay, or not being opened at all. And that decision is made the night before the snow even starts to fall. I am told that this is because we live in a rural area, and they don't want to take unnecessary chances with the school buses. It sometimes seems funny to me, though, because even though my adult life was spend in the South (Florida for 28 years before NC), I did grow up in NY and can remember looking out the front door the evening of a blizzard just HOPING that school would be canceled the next day, and then having to listen to the radio the next morning for the final list of schools that would be closed (even after two feet of snow had just fallen!). But, I guess that its better to be safe than sorry in this area.

Here are a few pictures of the Homestead taken this morning (if I can get the dang things to download...still having fits with Blogger on this).

The garden shed...

The gazebo...

Some statuary...

The house...

And, here is a recipe for Shrimp and Corn Chowder that I tried the other night. This appeared in the February, 2013 issue of Family Circle. Once you get the dicing and shrimp-cleaning done, it is pretty easy to make. The changes that I made was to use only 1.5 tsp of Old Bay seasoning, as Mr. Perch and I do not like stuff too spicy, and to cut out the hot sauce and the lemon juice (which I do not like with anything that is cream-based). I imagine that you could also add a hunk of Cod, or even replace the shrimp with it altogether. We thought it was really good. (I hope you can read the scan of this recipe)

Stay warm and dry. Until next time!

Rusty horseshoes, vintage lace, and old driftwood...

Good morning friends. I hope this post finds you all well.

What do horseshoes, lace, and driftwood have in common? Well, the other day I was out running errands and decided to stop at a little place not far from here that is owned by an elderly man who sells, for lack of a better description, "junque". As you can imagine, I love going there from time to time, as I never know what I might find. Sometimes, though, I go there with a specific purpose in mind. This time it was to satisfy my quest for an old horseshoe! I need one for a specific art piece that I plan on making for my granddaughter (more on that in a future post). Well, when I asked my little man if he had any, he smiled and said "walk to that box over yonder, and you will find some under the box of old jewelry". I could barely contain my excitement when I discovered these treasures! He mentioned that they are getting harder to come by, so I bought two "just in case"...

Sometimes you just never know what you can find, and where you can find it. Yesterday, my husband wanted to check out a store called Klingspor's Woodworking Shop down in Raleigh. It was a nice store that sold fine woodworking tools along with some rare woods. Lately, I have been collecting some beach-themed old photos. So imagine by joy when I noticed a table filled with pieces of old driftwood priced by the pound. I thought about my beach pictures, and well, needless to say I bought three small pieces. I am thinking some lovely assemblage. Stay tuned. By the way, Hubby bought NOTHING!!

As for the lace, more on that later as well.

Well, stay tuned until after I complete work on the invitations to my dad's 90th birthday party in March...hoping to finish those between today and tomorrow. I also plan on making him some sort of memory book, since I am the keeper of all his old family photos.

The weather is pretty cold, damp and rainy here, so I will make the best of it by sequestering myself in my art room.

Enjoy your day wherever you are!

Birdhouses and seashells...

Good morning friends. I am back from Florida, and thought I would say hello. I hope you're all well.

On our way down to Florida this week we stopped in Ocala (FL) to get some gas, and while my husband was busy with that, I noticed that next to the gas station there was a little stand that had severalbird houses for sale, as well as locally-produced jam and honey. Being a lover of birdhouses, I went over to take a look, and imagine my surprise when I was told that they were only $21.95! They were all different, but made in the same style using old pieces of wood, pine cone pieces made into flowers, and pieces of birch trunks. Some were whitewashed, and others were left natural. The one I bought is pictured below, and is about 14"H by 14"W. I guess that now that Christmas is behind us, I am thinking about the garden again!

Don't you just love the way this artist
made the flowers out of pine cones?

Then, on the one full day that we were there, we verified our campsite reservations at the KOA down in Venice (FL) for when we bring our motor home down for my dad's 90th birthday celebration in March. (For on our way home in March, we also made reservations at the KOA outside of Savannah while passing through the other day. The site that we reserved is on a lake that is abundant with swans and ducks. I can't wait to stay at this one because we are going to spend two days touring Savannah. I have been there a few times and love it, but my husband has not yet been there.)

Anyway, while in Venice we went to one of the local shops down by the beach and I bought some shells to use in future art projects, which some year I might even be able to get around to!

Some fossil shells, which are fairly flat
and will sew onto fabric collage quite
nicely...

...and some pretty sand dollars along with
mama starfish and their babies!!..

...some other shells (pardon the glare)...

...and here are all these beauties
assembled in an old drawer...

I am still fighting with not being able to use the picture icon in Blogger to download my pictures. Having to take them all from Picasa 3 is getting really annoying and time-consuming. It must just be me, as the other blogs that I read haven't mentioned any problems.

I hope that your weekend is off to a good start. Have a great day!

A little hello, and something to share...

Good morning friends. We are leaving on our trip today, so I don't have a lot of time for this post, but I will leave you with this sweetie...

I wonder if she got these dolls for Christmas?
